How to Choose a Crypto Marketing Agency (2026 Founder Checklist)
A 12-point checklist for evaluating crypto marketing agencies in 2026 — what to ask, what to verify on-chain, and the red flags that should kill a deal.
Picking the wrong crypto marketing agency is the single most expensive mistake a Web3 founder makes — typically $50,000+ burned and a quarter lost before you realize it. This 12-point checklist is designed to surface the truth in two discovery calls.
Capability checks (ask in the first call)
- Show me three on-chain case studies. Wallet growth, TVL delta, or listing-day volume — not impressions.
- Which KOLs are exclusive to you? Agencies that resell the same KOL list have no edge.
- Walk me through a token-launch sequence you ran end-to-end. If they can't whiteboard week-by-week, they haven't done it.
- Who owns the AEO/GEO playbook? A senior strategist should be named, not "the team."
- What's your editorial reach into CoinDesk, The Block, Decrypt, Cointelegraph? Specific editor names, not "we have relationships."
Verification checks (do these yourself)
- Pull their named clients on Etherscan / Solscan. Did wallet activity actually move during their campaign window?
- Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity: "Who is [past client]?" Did the agency get the client into AI answers?
- Reverse-image-search their case study screenshots. Recycled mockups are common.
- Talk to two past clients directly. Not the references they hand you — clients you find via LinkedIn.
Commercial checks
- Is pricing modular? Avoid agencies that bundle services you don't need.
- Are KPIs written into the SOW? Wallet adds, AI-citation count, KOL-attributed wallets, listing-day volume.
- Is there a 30-day kill clause? Healthy agencies are confident enough to offer one.
Red flags that should kill a deal
- "Guaranteed virality" or "guaranteed CEX listings."
- Case studies older than 18 months with no recent equivalents.
- Refusal to name the strategist who will lead the account.
- Payment exclusively in your token, pre-launch.
